My latest blog for Hidden Wiltshire recalls a recent walk in the borders of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. It is a landscape of spectacular and varied scenery steeped in history. It takes in long barrows, ancient earthworks, a Roman road and even a little mystery. A landscape of deep forest, ridge top trails, and one of Wiltshire’s beautifully peaceful combes cradling a nature reserve.
I must admit this turned into a surprisingly emotional journey. In Church Bottom, which leads from Broad Chalke up onto the ancient Ox Drove, I came across a simple memorial to a lady I’d never heard of let alone met. Kay Chalk was born a year before my mum. She was clearly much loved and her family has made a little bench looking out across some of the most beautiful, secluded scenery to be found anywhere. Sadly my mum died way too young and never lived to ripe old age that Kay attained. But mum would have loved this spot and I shall always be grateful to Kay for sharing it with me.
