Evidence suggests I started my photographic journey early. At about the age of 7. During my mid to late teens in Crawley my brother and I converted mum’s outside toilet and utility to a darkroom where we dabbled with mysterious chemicals and odd-shaped pieces of cardboard attached to wire.
Later, I converted the bathroom in my one bedroom flat in Bristol to a darkroom. My wife at the time learned to be very patient. And cross her legs.My interest in photography waxed and waned over the following decades. Eventually the darkroom equipment was sold (it may one day return) as I fully embraced the digital age.Fifteen years working in the City severely tested my tolerance of people and the urban environment. Commuting to London was nothing less than purgatory. Every day I longed for the peace and solitude of the countryside. It was not a happy time for me. Finally, good fortune enabled me to take voluntary redundancy in 2018 and I retired early to devote myself to my photography.
I’m interested in many genres of photography so I’m not sure I have a “style”. But a photographer for whom I have deep respect described me as an “Interpretive Photographer”. Maybe that’s what I am? But what I do know is that my home in a village on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England is the perfect antidote to my previous existence. I can lose myself in the landscape in all weathers, walking for hours on end, both with and without a camera. I also spend three months of the year living in south-west France where the landscape and people are quite different but no less captivating.
Back in Wiltshire I volunteer at a local nature reserve which is also a working farm. I take this opportunity to capture images of the landscape and of my fellow volunteers hard at work.
I am also a regular contributor to the Hidden Wiltshire website, writing illustrated blogs of my travels in this beautiful county. Over time this has taken up an increasing amount of my time and in January 2021 the Hidden Wiltshire founder Glyn Coy and I started a podcast, being joined in 2023 by Elaine Perkins. Many of the Blogs on my website comprise the show notes from the podcasts. Hopefully these will tempt you to give them a listen.
