Episode 5 of our Hidden Wiltshire podcast is now live in which we continue our walk in the hills above the Deverills. We follow a walk that both Glyn Coy have done about which I wrote a blog in May 2020 for the Hidden Wiltshire website.
The walk takes up where the last episode finished in Brixton Deverill before climbing the hills to the north of the River Wylye.
An incredible archaeological find was made in Brixton Deverill in 2015 when a resident found the remains of vast Roman villa in his garden whilst laying an electricity cable. The workmen came across a perfectly preserved mosaic.
As with the hills to the south, the hills to the north offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside as well as containing evidence of man’s occupation dating back to around 3,500BC. Cold Kitchen Hill is home to a huge magnificent Neolithic long barrow that is still in remarkable condition having been only partially excavated.
My photograph of a Queen’s jubilee beacon was taken just as I descended Cold Kitchen Hill and in the distance can be seen Little Knoll.
