being a shy, introverted person i don’t often take photographs of people. if i do it’s normally after we’ve been chatting for a while and both i and my subject are at ease. i love talking to people who work on the land during my frequently long walks. I’ve learned a lot about farming and rural life from these people. sometimes I’ll pluck up the courage and ask if i can make a porait but i do it in order to create a record of life in the countryside that hopefully will outlive me.
I’m a volunteer at a Natural England Nature Reserve just outside my village. I usually take a camera with me and sometimes I’ll stop work and take a picture as a document of the work we’re doing and of the amazing characters I work with. It can be hard work that someone with a past career such as mine is simply not used to. But I love it.
