There is a unique quality to the light in an ancient church. I am utterly captivated by it and for me it is best when captured on black and white film. the light softly diffused by panes of glass often hundreds of years old, especially when stained with rich colours, simply cannot be bettered. it bathes the wihitewashed walls in soothing tones which gently fall away from the brightest of whites to the richest of blacks. it makes capturing the scene in one frame a challenge but if you resign yourself to the fact that detail will be lost at both ends of the light spectrum then you will become absorbed by the tranquility of the environment in which you stand.
